Ethan Parker stepped through the heavy double doors of Grover High, the clang of metal echoing in the dimly lit hallway. The sharp scent of floor polish mingled with the faint, stale mustiness of old textbooks. He tugged at the straps of his backpack anxiously, his footsteps muted by the rubber soles of his sneakers. Today was meant to be like any other, but Ethan couldn't shake the sensation that something intangible had shifted in the world. It was as if the air carried a whisper he couldn't quite catch.

He spotted his friend, Tom Bennett, at the other end of the hall, leaning lazily against the lockers. Tom, with his unruly brown hair and perpetually mischievous grin, was hard to miss. As Ethan approached, Tom looked up, eyes momentarily meeting his before they slid right past, as if Ethan were nothing more than a specter in the crowd.

"Hey, Tom!" Ethan called, his voice cutting through the drone of early morning chatter. Tom's gaze flickered with something almost like recognition, then settled back into a familiar, vacant friendliness.

"Oh, uh, hey," Tom mumbled, shifting his weight awkwardly. There was a beat of silence, tense with unspoken confusion.
